Route

The map below shows our route that took us to the major scenic highlights of Iceland – 4000 kilometers in four weeks…

Actual Iceland Challenge Route [Credits]

Departing Berlin on 17 June, we drove our 4×4 support truck to Hirtshals in Denmark from where we took the ferry to Iceland. After a two-day trip accross the ocean, we arrived in Seyðisfjörður, located on Iceland’s east coast. From there we headed south following the ring road towards Reykjavík, passing one of the most amazing spots – the glacier lagoon of Jökulsárlón.

For the second part of our trip we focussed on the West Fjords and the Highlands – two magnificent areas of this diverse country.

We could not cover the whole distance by bike in just one month, as the traveling speed is very slow in the rough terrain of the highlands. And we spend quite some time for photo shoots and filming.

The highlights of our journey included:

    • The glacier lagoon of Jökulsárlón at the southern end of Europe’s largest ice cap – the Vatnajökull
    • The lively and modern capital city of Reykjavík
    • Geysir and the Gullfoss waterfall
    • The colorful mountains and lava landscapes of Landmannalaugar
    • The hot springs and steem fountains of Hveravellir
    • The mystic world of the remote West Fjords with the Ísafjörður township
    • The birds rocks at Látrabjarg
    • Mývatn lake and the surrounding crater landscape
    • Húsavík, the Icelandic wale watching capital
    • The mud and steem vulcanos at and around Krafla
    • Dettifoss waterfalls with the largest volume in Europe
    • Krepputunga, the black inland desert
    • Herðubreið, Iceland’s Uluru
    • Askja, THE crater of Iceland, partly filled with water
    • The glacier gate of Kverkfjöll in the north of the Vatnajökull ice cap
    • The legendary mountain Snæfellsnes
    • The East Fjords with the pleasant town of Borgafjördur
